Many workers are at risk of injury at work and some professions are inherently
more dangerous than others. However, a recent survey released by U.S.
Healthworks seems to show that the most common
work-related injury can happen in safe and risky workplaces alike. What is this most common
injury? A back injury.
U.S. Healthworks operates health centers nationally. These health centers
treat on-the-job injuries. Every year it releases a list of top workplace
injuries along with suggested tips to avoid this type of injury at work.
This year at the top of the list was back injuries. Following back injuries
on the list were finger cuts, then sprained shoulders, then neck sprains
and finally, knee/leg injuries.
The results were gathered from more than 208 locations across the country
that saw more than 12,000 patients per day. According to the national
medical director for U.S. Healthworks, back injuries are still the most
common injury in industrial jobs. However, this type of injury is also
common for those that work office jobs. An office worker is most likely
to be injured due to the inappropriate setup of their workstation or improper lifting.
Employers are required to make whatever efforts are reasonably necessary
to ensure their employees have a safe workplace and get the necessary
education regarding prevention of injury. However, U.S. Healthworks also
made some suggestions for preventing back injuries. Some of these suggestions
include stretching in the morning and learning proper lifting techniques.
Workers who have been injured on the job need to know that they are often
entitled to workers' compensation benefits to help them work through
these injuries. Workers' compensation benefits will provide them with
compensation to cover financial hardships such as lost wages and medical bills.
