Weapons Charges
Using a weapon in a state or federal crime makes you subject to mandatory penalties. You can be charged with having an unlicensed weapon, or with using it in the commission of a crime. If you are facing any type of weapons charge, from carrying an unregistered firearm to assault with a deadly weapon, contact an attorney who will work to find alternative charges and penalties. A defense that seeks to lower the charges in weapons crimes
Mr. Vatz’s approach to weapons cases is similar to that for all criminal defense cases–he analyzes the prosecution’s case, makes sure that all evidence was collected legally, and determines whether there were any mitigating circumstances. He files motions to suppress any evidence illegally seized–for example, if a weapon was found during a search without a warrant, there may be grounds for suppression. If a weapon was found during a routine traffic stop, he may be able to have that evidence suppressed. In short, he does everything possible to make sure our clients are facing the lowest level of weapons charges.
Alternative sentencing is available for lower charges
Conviction of many weapons charges, including those involving drug crimes, carry significant sentences in state or federal prison. Even lesser charges result in county jail time. Mr. Vatz tries to obtain alternatives to county jail, including sentencing to a halfway house or boot camp for younger adults.
