Becoming injured on the job is sometimes unavoidable in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, workplace injuries can be costly, requiring expensive medical treatment and preventing a person from being able to earn a living for a particular amount of time. One man in a different state recently encountered this type of situation at a construction site.
The man, 52, was in an interstate construction area doing work on equipment in the evening hours. He suddenly became tangled in the equipment on which he was working. The man then fell into an auger on one of the machines. An auger is used to move cement in construction areas and resembles a conveyor belt.
The worker’s lower legs were seriously injured in the work accident. The victim was taken to one hospital by ambulance and was then transported to another hospital via helicopter. Police said the man’s injures were critical, although they were non-life-threatening. The accident is being investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The man might be incapable of working for an extended period of time, depending on the severity of his leg injuries. This can negatively affect the worker and his or her household, especially if the family depends on his or her paychecks to stay afloat financially. Workers’ compensation insurance is valuable in that it allows people who suffer workplace injuries to have a percentage of their regular pay replenished while they recover from their injuries. This type of insurance also helps workers cover their associated medical costs. It is within an injured worker’s right to pursue the full amount of benefits due to him or her in Pennsylvania.
