Being taken into custody on drunk driving charges can be one of the worst experiences in a person’s life. A person accused of DUI might be worried not only about his or her image and reputation but also about the penalties he or she will face if convicted. One man in Pennsylvania was recently arrested on DUI charges following an accident.
Police said they received a report about a person who was driving erratically and ended up hitting multiple mailboxes. This driver also hit guide wires on a road. Police said they then stopped the vehicle and found a 67-year-old man driving. A boy, 10, was riding as a passenger and was holding onto the handle of the vehicle roof.
The front part of the vehicle was extensively damaged. When police asked the man how the vehicle had gotten damaged, he said he did not know. Authorities said he smelled of alcohol, and his speech was slurred; the man reported that he had taken prescription drugs earlier that day and did not want to perform a field sobriety test. He was arrested on charges of DUI and endangering a child. Police said he actually had three pending cases involving DUI.
A person who has been charged with DUI may face consequences such as jail time and fines, especially if this is not his or her first offense. The problems caused by DUI charges can last years, keeping a person from landing a job or being allowed to rent a vehicle. It is for this reason that drunk driving charges need to be proved beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can be secured. Anyone facing DUI charges in Pennsylvania has the same rights that protect people facing charges of other types of criminal conduct.
