There are few things in life as important to people as family and friends. While family relationships can be challenging from time to time, friendships are often a port in the storms of life. That’s why it can be potentially devastating when someone stands accused of causing the death of a friend. Unfortunately, one Pennsylvania man may be charged with a DUI that supposedly led to the death of a passenger — quite possibly his friend — when they were involved in a serious car accident.
Pennsylvania authorities have stated that they intend to file charges of intoxicated driving against the 26-year-old man, who they said was driving the car around 1 a.m. on a Sunday morning. According to the reports, the man was traveling along a road in Dauphin County when his sedan crossed over the dividing line. The vehicle then crashed into a car that was traveling in the opposing lane.
The passenger in the first car, also 26 years old, reportedly died from his injuries at the scene. The three occupants of the second vehicle were all hurt in the wreck, and two of them, along with the accused driver, were transported to the same medical facility. The first driver was seriously hurt, while at least two of the other parties were less seriously injured. There was no report concerning the severity of the injuries of the other driver. Three of the injured were reported to have not been using their safety restraints, including the victim who was killed.
Apart from the DUI charges expected in this matter, the driver who is believed to have caused the accident was charged with other offenses earlier this year and was awaiting further legal proceedings in that matter. At this time, while he is seeking to recover from his injuries, he may also be struggling with the realization that the accident resulted in the death of another person. Nevertheless, the severe consequences that he could face were a conviction to be secured require that he focuses his efforts on his criminal defense to all of the Pennsylvania charges. There are a number of unanswered questions concerning this tragedy, and defense counsel will need to begin the process of carefully examining the proposed evidence and arrest record as this case moves forward.
